How to Import Heavy Machinery from China Safely? A Guide for First-Time Buyers

Buying a $20,000 Dust Collector or Filter Press from China is a big decision. Many buyers worry about customs, shipping damage, or hidden costs. Here is a step-by-step guide from the Porvoo Export Team.

1. Choose the Right Incoterms (CIF vs. FOB)

FOB (Free On Board): We put the machine on the ship. You handle the ocean freight. Good if you have a trusted forwarder.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): We handle everything until it reaches your port. Easier for first-time buyers.

2. Packaging is Critical

Ocean air is salty and humid. If the machine is not wrapped in VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) film, it will arrive rusty. At Porvoo, we use 3 layers of protection and fumigated wooden crates compliant with ISPM 15 standards.

3. Spare Parts Strategy

Shipping a small part later by air is expensive. We always recommend buying a “2-Year Spare Parts Kit” (Filter cloths, O-rings, Buttons) together with the machine. It ships for free inside the container.

4. Installation Support

Do you need a visa for our engineers? Or can we install it remotely? Check our “Remote Installation Guide” to save travel costs.
