A Maintenance Guide for Factory Owners

Why is Your Dust Collector Losing Suction? A Maintenance Guide for Factory Owners

A high-efficiency dust collector is the lungs of your factory. It keeps the air clean and protects your workers. But what happens when, one day, you notice dust floating in the air again? The suction is weak. The hood is not capturing the dust.

Many operators panic and think the fan motor is broken. In 90% of cases, the motor is fine. The problem lies elsewhere. At Porvoo, we have solved hundreds of dust collection issues. Here are the top 3 reasons why your system is losing power.

1. The “Blocked Nose”: Clogged Filter Bags

This is the most common cause. If the dust cake on the filter bags is too thick, air cannot pass through. It’s like trying to breathe through a wet towel.

How to check: Look at the Differential Pressure Gauge (Magnahelic) on the side of the machine.

If the reading is high (> 1500 Pa or 6 inches w.g.), your bags are blinded.

Solution: Check if your pulse cleaning system is working. If the bags are old (used > 1-2 years), the fine dust might be embedded in the fibers. It’s time to replace them with Porvoo PTFE Membrane Bags.

2. The “Weak Heartbeat”: Broken Pulse Valves

Pulse Jet Dust Collectors rely on bursts of compressed air to shake the dust off the bags. This is done by Pulse Valves (Diaphragm Valves).

If you don’t hear the rhythmic “Pop… Pop… Pop…” sound, or if you hear a continuous leaking hiss, a valve is broken.

The Fix: Usually, the rubber diaphragm inside the valve is cracked due to fatigue or oil in the compressed air. Replace the diaphragm kit immediately. A single broken valve can disable a whole row of filter bags.

3. The “Slipping Muscle”: Loose Fan Belts

Sometimes the solution is simple mechanics. The centrifugal fan is driven by V-belts. Over time, belts stretch and wear out.

If the belts are loose, the fan spins slower than the motor. You lose RPM, and you lose Airflow (CFM).

Maintenance Tip: Press the belt with your thumb. It should not deflect more than 1-2 cm. If it’s loose, tighten the tensioner or replace the set of belts.

Conclusion: Maintenance is Key

A dust collector is not a “set it and forget it” machine. Regular checks on Differential Pressure, Pulse Valves, and Fan Belts will ensure your factory stays clean and compliant.

Need to replace Filter Bags or Pulse Valves?

We stock compatible parts for all major dust collector brands.

🛠️ Get a Maintenance Quote

WhatsApp: +86 138 2777 8901

Why is Your Dust Collector Losing Suction?
